TALK: Of Numbers and Nations in the Religions of Asia

  • Robert Hull Fleming Museum of Art and Anthropology 61 Colchester Avenue Burlington, VT, 05405 United States

Numbers can be important in religions (the Christian Trinity, Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, and 1008 in Hinduism), and religions and politics are regularly intertwined, but all three together? Despite the seeming incongruence, in recent years there has been significant blending of numbers in religious and political mobilizations within Asia, such as the 969 movement in Myanmar which has stirred conflict between Buddhists and Muslims. This talk examines entanglements of religion and numbers in the service of nationalist movements in contemporary Asian countries.
